Christian’s of Buck Point is one of the older and finer establishments on Norfolk Island – an old-school luxurious property with countryside décor and warmth. It’s set within a 2-acre private garden, boasting of scenic views of Ball Bay and Philips Island in the distance. Ringed by fragrant flowers and sub-tropical trees, the building is quite the escape from big city life.
Built in 1914 by Cornelius Christian – who was a direct descendent of one of the original Bounty mutineers Fletcher Christian – this Norfolk Island villa is ideal for couples and honeymooners, but can also host large families and groups on a Norfolk Island holiday.
The Christian’s of Buck Point is a spacious option with its three bedrooms and bathrooms, living room, dining room, full kitchen, study and a seating area. There’s also a laundry section, a linen section, a pantry, and a carport outside. The entirety of the interior features historic convict-milled timber, with each room having a different type and tint of wood.
The three bedrooms are similar, not the same. The master bedroom is cosy with views of the orchard and includes a queen bed along with countryside-inspired furniture. The ensuite features a vanity, a shower and a toilet. The other two bedrooms, both on either side of the seating area, feature king beds that can be converted into split king singles. The larger of the two opens to the veranda, while the other has French windows to let in the pine-scented breeze. Besides the master ensuite, there are two bathrooms in the villa, set next to each other. The larger of the two is accessible from the living room. It comes with the usual amenities expected of a bathroom and also features a claw-foot tub.
The living room at the Christian’s ties the whole property together. Large, airy and with easy access to the kitchen, bedrooms and the separate sitting area, the living room comes with a large flatscreen TV with a DVD player and comfortable contemporary seating. The kitchen features a full stove top, microwave, oven, dishwasher, a pantry, and a bevy of pots, pans and cutlery. The kitchen embraces an open-plan layout, flowing into the dining space. Norfolk Island has a beautiful farmer’s market culture where visitors can browse and select fresh produce and embrace the paddock-to-plate philosophy. This is a welcome opportunity for couples and families to engage in an activity that fosters togetherness and rewards with… great meals!
Speaking of food, the cottage has a separate balcony at the back with a BBQ. It’s the perfect spot to spend Sundays in – grilling a steak and enjoying it with a cold one. There’s also a wrap-around verandah to the front where world-weary travellers can find a moment of peace and quiet, and soak in views of the garden and the Pacific Ocean in the distance.
Christian’s of Buck Point is in Kingston, Norfolk Island’s administrative and cultural centre. Holidaymakers can use the hire car at their disposal to explore all that this charming seaside town has to offer. There are quaint cafes here, lovely restaurants and shops selling a variety of knick-knacks and keepsakes.
However, most of the time will be spent exploring the Kingston and Arthur’s Vale Historic Area – an UNESCO World Heritage site. There’s a cemetery here, ruins from convict-era settlements, and more. Explore a little each day and come back to visit the following day – KAVHA is best experienced in sips and not gulps.
Emily Bay and Cemetery Bay beaches are a skip and a hop from the Arthur’s Vale area, a place where visitors frequently end up during the golden hour for a beachside stroll. Emily Bay is popular with families for its clear-calm waters, pristine beach and lack of crowds. It’s perhaps the best beach in all of Norfolk Island to build a sand castle or just have a lovely couple’s picnic.
