Coast Norfolk Island is a boutique stay near the island’s historic Kingston and Arthur’s Vale Historic Area — a UNESCO heritage site. Here, guests can look forward to island-style luxurious cottages, inspiring views and a host of activities to enjoy. Tucked away in Ferry lane, it just takes six minutes to arrive at the holiday resort in a hire-car from the international airport. Post a quick meet-and-greet, it’s just unwinding and relaxation for days on end.
The Coast Norfolk has seven cottages to choose from. Some are meant for families, like the Two Bedroom Apartment, Routi Beach House and Rahooloo, which has a bedroom on each of its two floors. And some are meant for couples and backpackers with their one-bedroom setup. While king beds are the norm, they can be switched for split singles upon request.
Coast Norfolk Island cottages’ luxury quotient lies in its simplicity. The cottages and houses on the property do not stand out, but blend in with the nature-first ambience. The same reflects in the interiors, which are purposefully minimal – but not spartan. With some rooms showcasing dual-toned colours, the rooms focus on maximising natural light and air. This creates an interesting medley of light and shadows as the sun moves up in the sky.
Plus, every accommodation comes with a cosy lounge well-equipped with plush seating and a full kitchen to pamper the inner chef in you. Norfolk Island is known for its paddock-to-plate sustainability and its friendly local markets. Handpick the freshest produce, get some locally-sourced cold cuts and strike up a friendly conversation with fellow tourists . Oh! and every cottage-style stay at the Coast features a private patio or deck from where to enjoy Norfolk Island’s untrammelled beauty and warm meals alfresco. Some like the Studio aren’t just quaint, but come with a garden and a postcard-perfect garden door.
Coast is designed to be an idyllic Norfolk Island stay. For starters, it is surrounded by green pines, leafy palms and ringed with banks of wildflowers. It’s also close to the ocean, ergo the name. So, a stay here is less about fast-paced experiences and more about mindfully soaking everything in.
That’s not to say that an impromptu foxtrot in the lounge needs to be ruled out, but guests might better enjoy the crackle of a fireplace, the sizzle of the BBQ grill, and the smell of old books at the resort’s Boat House. Plus, it’s an excellent opportunity to run into new friends, swap stories and snap selfies in a cheerful communal setting.
When out on a morning walk, guests can experience the ethereal beauty that is mist resting on top of pines and oak trees and it’s a sight to behold when the sunbeams streak through. Walking barefoot on dew-kissed grass and observing grazing sheeps are also time well spent in our books. Of course, the more adventurous tourists might want to set out on bushwalks, explore the nearby Bomboras Reserve or set out on a mountain hike. While those looking for a more muted physical activity will appreciate the 9-hole golf course nearby.
Coast Norfolk Island cottages’ location provides two benefits. One, it is ridiculously easy to partake in water based activities. There’s a saltwater pool nearby where guests can enjoy relaxing dips and sunbath. For some longboard surfing, it is a good idea to visit Bumboras Reserve. It leads to a secluded beach where the waves can get high. It’s also ripe for a beachside picnic – just make sure not to spread your beach towel right next to the water. Two, the resort is located close to the Kingston and Arthur’s Vale Historic Area or KAVHA. Visitors can spend a day or two examining the ruins, reading up on the history and re-tracing the very footsteps that prisoners, buccaneers and Polynesian explorers took. Visitors are free to explore on their own and at their own pace. Guides aren’t a necessity but can be helpful, especially for first-timers on the island.
What’s also unique about Coast is the inclusion of a spa —a feature usually reserved for luxury hotels. Here, patrons can put weary muscles to rest as island-inspired therapies weave their magic. But then, this is just scratching the surface of what to do on a Norfolk Island holiday. There’s so much more to see, do and experience — read all about it in our blogs.
Norfolk’s not a very big island, and routine joggers and fitness enthusiasts might just want to explore it on foot. While that’s a perfectly fine, albeit sweaty, idea… it just might be a little unappealing to general holidaymakers. Also, it’s one reason why public transport is negligible. That’s why it is important to have pre-arranged hire cars. They make it easy to go exploring, discover uncharted picnic spots and zip around in general. The resort thoughtfully provides a private driveway for some of its cottages.
Coast Norfolk Island is its own brand of a subtropical holiday experience. Its charms are many, from communal settings and quiet cottages to cultural charms and golfing delights. It’s perfect for couples rediscovering each other, honeymooners celebrating themselves and families wanting to slow down and reconnect.
