Listen to Fresh Finds & Island Vibes – Norfolk Island’s Farmers’ Markets Beckon!

Norfolk is a pristine beauty, untrammelled and exotic that regularly charms visitors. Travellers regularly embark on its shores, in search of a peaceful, idyllic holiday and more often than not find it here. Some have made it their home, just like the Pitcairn Islanders did all these years back.

Since then, agriculture has been the keystone of the arch that is Norfolk Island society and culture. Due to import restrictions in place, the Norfolk Island community has depended on farmers for satiating its hunger pangs on time, and the farmers have delivered every time. Growing food on the island is not easy, challenges are aplenty and perhaps that has led to farmers inculcating positive traits like patience, diligence and humility coupled with honesty and a sense of positive spirit; traits that have spilled onto the culture in general and giving its hospitality the genuine warmth it is known for.

What are farmers’ markets, though?

For the uninitiated, a farmers’ market is a place where local farmers and producers come together to sell produce directly to the community. Other things like semi-processed foods, artisanal items and handcrafted products are sold too. Farmers’ markets are usually open-air places with pop-up stores where visitors can buy seasonal produce, directly help small businesses and connect with the people who labour day in and out to grow – all in a friendly community setting.

Why visit a farmer’s market on your Norfolk Island holiday?

There are two Norfolk Island farmers’ markets and a big reason for visiting them is getting to know the locals and get some of the freshest produce on the island. Each of them pops-up in a laid-back location and have enough wares to pique your interest and make you pull out your money bag a couple of times.

Norfolk Island growers champion the concept of paddock to plate. It is a model quite like the farm to fork, just that the turn-around-time here is extremely low. Most of the farms are less than an hour away from the marketplace and so, the produce is as fresh as it can get. The market starts early and so, most of the harvest is done the day before.

Apart from fresh produce, you will find here premium and regular pork and beef cuts, curated cheese collection, free-range eggs, a variety of homemade jams, jellies and cookies, and a wide range of absolutely delicious pickles and mouthwatering sauces! You will also find home-cooked foods like pasta, lasagna, pies, muffins, cakes and local island delicacies on sale, perfect to tame that hungry belly after all the walking that you will do. And did we mention fresh flowers?

When and where to visit?

This Norfolk Island activity is for the early birds. The farmer market comes together every Saturday at the Rawson Hall Car Park, near the Visitors’ Information Centre. The trucks and stalls are up and running by 7am and last call is at 11am.

The island markets are a regular affair on Sundays and they come up at the Bicentennial Complex. The stalls are up from 8:30am to 11am and they sell a wide variety of arts and crafts, most of it handmade using locally sourced materials. This Sunday market is perfect for browsing a treasure trove of trinkets and experiencing the joy of finding that perfect keepsake. The wares also make for great gifts for your loved ones back home. The island market is rather famous for its live music and cultural performances, so be sure to check them out when visiting and leave a dollar or two at the fundraising BBQ.

Tips for visiting the markets in Norfolk

The best time to visit the markets would be right when they open for business. Norfolk Islanders love their fresh produce and multi-hued trinkets; they fly fast off the shelves! Another thing to take note of is that these markets are small and therefore an intimate shopping experience, a far cry from the expansive malls, Ikea and Costco stores in cities.

Norfolk Islanders are friendly, everyone sort of knows everyone and they lend out the same warmth to the guests. So much so that some stalls selling produce and products have no tellers, but an honesty box! Therefore, when interacting with the locals, the common touch with a helping of humility is the winning way. Another helpful tip is to carry cash. Internet is not the strongest here and card transactions can and do fail. Also, vendors are unlikely to have a POS (point of sale) machine with them. It is also a good idea to carry change. Oh! And remember to carry reusable bags when you visit the markets.
