Norfolk Islands are bewitching, just like any tropical paradise. While we always recommend exploring the island on your own, sometimes tours are a nice change of pace. Here, we highlight four tours that are big on the island’s nature, history, lore and… good food.
The Commandants’ Dinner and Show is quite the way to learn about the island and its history. Enjoy a wholesome traditional English meal while an ensemble of actors transport you to 18th century Norfolk. Pair each bite with riveting tales of mutinies, rebellions and the many trials and tribulations of both – the convicts and the commandants as they go about making a harsh landscape hospitable. You get to live it all – their failings, glories and secrets with the Commandants’ Dinner and Show on Wednesdays from 6:30 pm onwards. You’ll see, the evening would dramatic, and equally filling!
Accompany a local historian on this offbeat ‘Convict’ tour in the Kingston and Arthur’s Vale Historic Area – a World Heritage site. The tour offers a comprehensive history of the island, spanning the settlement’s four periods; beginning with the arrivals of the Polynesians, to the convict settlements and culminating with the Bounty mutineers. The tour focuses on the convict settlements in and around the Kingston area, including a pitstop at the local cemetery. As of writing, this tour is available on Sundays and Wednesdays at 1 pm i.e. 1300 hours. Refreshments are provided.
One of the more popular attractions on the island, the Night on the Bounty is a period-accurate reenactment of the famous mutiny on HMS Bounty. Hosted in a theatre restaurant, visitors are in for a night of feasting and entertainment over a three-course dinner. A cast of talented actors recreate the story in a fun and engaging way. Experience life on board, get to know about the crew and marvel at the famed captain of this doomed vessel – Captain Bligh- every Tuesday, 6:30 pm onwards. Let the journey from England to Tahiti begin!
This tour is an out-and-out hit with nature lovers and anyone liking a sustainable lifestyle. The Breakfast Bushwalks is a great way to begin your Norfolk mornings, starting every Thursday morning at seven. The local guide helps identify local grasses, flowers, ferns, shrubs and trees as well as the various colourful birds flitting by! The early morning walk is also great to catch and chat up national park rangers as they patrol by. Breakfast bushwalk accommodates guests of all fitness levels and culminates with a delicious BBQ breakfast with all the trimmings.
